Top government officials met at the Executive Office of the President (KSP) on Thursday to discuss the recent violence in several districts in Papua, as well as the stability of development efforts in the newly formed Central Papua, Mountain Papua, Southwest Papua, and South Papua provinces. Headed by Presidential Chief of Staff Dr. Moeldoko, the meeting emphasized the need for more coordinated efforts among various ministries and agencies to ensure a peaceful and prosperous Papua, amidst reports of ongoing violence in certain areas.
“Today’s meeting is very important for us to reflect together. According to data from various institutions, there is still violence in several districts in Papua,” said Moeldoko, Thursday (23/2).
“This is truly ironic because on the one hand, the government continues to promote development in Papua, and indicators such as the Human Development Index continue to improve. But on the other hand, there are still security disruptors who commit acts of violence,” he added.
The meeting was attended by several chiefs of related Ministries/Agencies, including TNI Commander, Admiral TNI Yudo Margono.
In a crucial meeting to ensure the progress of welfare development in Papua, the Chief of Staff to the President called for all Ministries/Agencies to step up their game and intensify their coordination efforts. By working together more closely, the state can create a conducive environment for the advancement of Papua’s regions and bring about positive change for its people.
Meanwhile, four laws regarding the formation of new provinces in Papua have been officially enacted after being signed by President Joko Widodo last year. The division of Papua and West Papua Provinces is an effort to intensify the acceleration of development and welfare for the Papua community, especially in terms of participation and public services.
Despite certain areas in the Papua region experiencing an increase in violence, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its citizens. With a renewed focus on creating a peaceful environment and restoring stability, the government is taking decisive action to address the issues facing the mountainous region and ensure the welfare and prosperity of all Papua communities.
The government’s efforts to improve the lives of people in remote Papua are in full swing, with a special focus on enhancing transportation access, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other essential infrastructure. This push is particularly aimed at providing immediate relief to residents in the newly-established autonomous regions of the province. The government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the people of Papua have access to all basic necessities is a testament to their dedication to the welfare and progress of the region.
“From a political-economic perspective, the government has tried to break the chain of violence through a comprehensive package of Papua welfare development policies,” Moeldoko concluded.
