KSP Reviews Readiness of Sekolah Rakyat and Visits Prospective Students in West Java

Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (KSP), M. Qodari, conducted a two-day working visit from June 3 to 4, 2025, to review the readiness of the free public school for the poor (Sekolah Rakyat)  at the Pangudi Luhur Integrated Center (STPL) in Bekasi and the Phala Martha Center in Sukabumi, West Java.

During this visit, M. Qodari was accompanied by the Special Staff to the Chief of Staff to the President, Timothy Ivan Triyono, and officials from the Ministry of Social Affairs. They also visited the homes of prospective students in Bantar Gebang, Bekasi, and Tanah Sereal, Bogor, to directly observe their conditions and those of their families.

The visit began at STPL Bekasi, which will serve as a temporary Sekolah Rakyat facility for 180 children from families in extreme poverty. On this occasion, M. Qodari was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Social Affairs, Agus Jabo.

“This center serves as the Ministry of Social Affairs service hub for various disadvantaged groups. First and foremost, it is a concrete form of the government’s commitment to its less fortunate citizens. It represents the state’s presence for those who are underprivileged and marginalized, managed by the Ministry of Social Affairs,” said Qodari.

After inspecting STPL, M. Qodari continued the visit to Bantar Gebang, Bekasi, where he visited the home of Reski Septian, a prospective student of the Sekolah Rakyat. Reski’s father, Rahman, a scavenger of recyclable materials, shared his hope that his son could receive a proper education. He emphasized that the Sekolah Rakyat program is designed to break the cycle of economic limitation.

“All Indonesian children have the right to gain improvement. They should be able to dream big, without being buried by economic problems,” said Qodari.

The following day, June 4, 2025, M. Qodari continued his visit to Tanah Sereal, Bogor, to meet Muhammad Dwi Arya Ramadhan, another prospective Sekolah Rakyat student. Arya’s mother, Neneng Marlina, a garlic peeler, welcomed Qodari. During their conversation, M. Qodari illustrated the challenges a mother endures for her child’s education.

“The annual cost of Arya’s education and living expenses at the Sekolah Rakyat is equivalent to his mother’s wages for peeling garlic for 4.5 years. It means completing three years of junior high school needs 13.5 years of continuous labor. If he graduates from senior high school, it would be equivalent to 27 years of peeling garlic daily,” Qodari explained.

“The child of a garlic peeler can now dream and have a brighter future because the state is ready to take action,” he affirmed.

Lastly, M. Qodari inspected the Phala Martha Center in Sukabumi. He observed the various facilities, including dormitories, classrooms, laboratories, sports fields, and the mosque. He is confident that a clean and comfortable environment will support the children’s learning process.

“Alhamdulillah, overall this place is very good, well-maintained, and clean. With this situation, I am confident the teaching and learning process will run smoothly and provide a good environment for our children,” said M. Qodari.

Sekolah Rakyat is a national priority program providing free and good-quality education to children from families in extreme poverty. The program is implemented collaboratively by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the Executive Office of the President. Besides educational facilities, the Sekolah Rakyat also provides uniforms, shoes, laptops, and nutritious meals for the students.

The Deputy Chief of Staff to the President emphasized that this cross-ministerial collaboration will be strengthened to realize inclusive and empowering education for Indonesian children. Sekolah Rakyat is targeted to start accepting new students in July 2025.

“This is a real effort to break the cycle of extreme poverty through equal and good-quality education. With the synergy of all parties, we hope the younger generation from underprivileged families can have a brighter future,” concluded M. Qodari.
