Chief of Presidential Staff Vows to Improve Welfare of Indonesian Soldiers

Makassar – Moeldoko, the Chief of Presidential Staff, made a resolute commitment to bolster the welfare and support system for Indonesian soldiers during his visit to Kesatrian Yonif Raider 700/Wira Yudha Cakti, Kodam XIV/Hasanuddin in Makassar on Thursday (1/6).

In a passionate address to TNI AD soldiers, Moeldoko emphasized the government’s dedication to improving their well-being and ensuring they receive the benefits and allowances they deserve. This pledge comes as a testament to the nation’s unwavering gratitude and recognition of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who protect the Republic of Indonesia.

During the meeting, Moeldoko, accompanied by Deputy Chief of Staff for Human Development, Abtenego Tarigan, and Senior Advisor of the Executive Office of the President, Brigadier General (Ret.) Dr. Noch Tiranduk Mallisa, seized the opportunity to delve into a comprehensive report on the welfare of the soldiers.

The report underscored a concerning fact: there has been no adjustment in performance incentives (remuneration) and Daily Meal Allowance (ULP) since January 1, 2018, despite the relentless surge in the cost of essential commodities.

According to the report, the current performance incentive for soldiers stands at 75 percent. The lowest-ranking soldiers receive a performance incentive of Rp 2,089,000 (approx. $145), alongside a salary of Rp 1,680,000 (approx. $117). Additionally, they receive a daily meal allowance of Rp 60,000 (approx. $4.20).

Responding to the situation, Moeldoko stressed that President Joko Widodo is strongly committed to improving the welfare of Indonesian soldiers.

“Why? Because the nation truly needs you to safeguard the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia,” emphasized Moeldoko. He further stated his determination to push for these improvements by engaging with relevant ministries and institutions, including the President.

During his address, Moeldoko also urged the soldiers to maintain their neutrality during the upcoming 2024 elections and emphasized the importance of preserving democracy.

Recognizing the delicate balance between maintaining stability and upholding democratic values, he called on the soldiers to prepare themselves to fulfill their duties to the best of their abilities. Moeldoko acknowledged the limited scope within which the TNI operates in safeguarding democracy, as their primary obligation is to maintain stability.

“I urge you to strike a balance between stability and democracy to ensure continued growth. Prepare yourselves to execute your tasks with utmost excellence,” said Moeldoko, who served as the Commander of TNI from 2013 to 2015.

Notably, Kesatrian Yonif Raider 700/Wira Yudha Cakti, Kodam XIV/Hasanuddin, Makassar, holds significant meaning for Moeldoko, as it was his first assignment post after graduating from the Military Academy in 1981. During his time in the elite infantry raider unit of the TNI AD, Moeldoko climbed the ranks from Second Lieutenant to Captain, where he learned valuable lessons on leadership from his commanders and shaped his life’s trajectory.

As part of his visit, Moeldoko took a moment to revisit his former official residence. With a smile, he remarked, “The wooden window frames still look the same.”

Moeldoko’s unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of Indonesian soldiers highlights the government’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of those who protect the nation. With his pledge, the Chief of Presidential Staff aims to create a more prosperous and supportive environment for TNI personnel, recognizing their invaluable contributions to national security.
