Jakarta – The Chief of Staff to the President, General (ret.) Dr. Moeldoko just attended an invitation as a speaker in the World Food Forum (WFF) held by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy on 16 to 20 October 2023.
At this forum, Moeldoko invited global leaders and international organizations to joint efforts as a real action in overcoming the world food crisis. He also raised the idea from Indonesia’s founding father, President Soekarno, namely “Beautiful Garden Among Nations” as a place for joint work to face common interests.
“This idea emphasizes the importance of cooperations between nations to create a world full of peace and prosperity. In a peaceful and prosperous world, every nation can share resources, including food resources,” said Moeldoko.
Moeldoko also reminds that the threat of world food crisis has become the “common enemy”. Moreover, FAO already shows that 735 million people all over the world are at risk of chronic hunger. In terms of food problems, according to him, it is not only to fulfill the hunger, but also determines the security of the country. “We need to be cautious when food security is disrupted, it will influence our national and global stability. Be Aware.. Be Aware,” he said.
Furthermore, Moeldoko said that Indonesia has initiated the joint movement and show leaderships in many global forums, namely G-20, Association of the South Asian Nations (ASEAN), Archipelagic Islands State (AIS), and participated in South-South Triangular cooperation and other minilaterals. He also hopes that through the World Food Forum held by FAO, will possibly produce various collaborations between nations to overcome the world food crisis.
Domestically, Moeldoko proceeded, Indonesia is currently transforming its food and agricultural system. One of them is preparing young generations in the agricultural sector from upstream to downstream as its focusing on generations matters. “If there are no more young generations in the agricultural sector, the question is what will the world consume in the next 20 years, if the amount of farmers is fewer,” Moeldoko added.
For this reason, said Moeldoko, he initiated several concrete actions to stimulate Indonesian young generations to enter the agricultural sector. This includes the Presidential Staff College as a forum for young generations to study, experience and understand the complexity of state management in making public policy. The Presidential Staff College with FAO Indonesia has collaborated to provide an understanding of the world food crisis and the importance of sustainable agriculture to the prospective Indonesian future leaders.
Besides, as well as the chairman of the Indonesian Farmers Association (HKTI), Moeldoko formed “Maju Tani”. As a forum for young people to carry out smart farming using a meta farming model, also using technology approaches such as artificial intelligence and digitalization to renew agricultural business systems. “What I did differently is that I forged a close collaboration between generations X farmers and baby boomers so that there is an exchange of wisdom and technology between them,” he said.
To sum everythings up, Moeldoko called on young generations to lead on new sustainable food resources, including sorghum and sago as one of the solutions in facing food challenges due to climate change. “To all youths, it is time for you to move forward. We will support you with real works, and no more rethorics,” he concluded.
