Moeldoko Optimistic About Indonesia’s Leverage in the Global EV Industry

Jakarta – The Chief of Staff to the President, Dr. Moeldoko, expressed his optimism regarding the booming electric vehicle (EV) industry in Indonesia, emphasizing its potential as a global game-changer. He shared his positive outlook during the opening ceremony of the Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) 2023 at JiExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Wednesday (17/5).

Also serving as the Chairman of the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (Periklindo), Moeldoko highlighted the recent agreement among ASEAN leaders during the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, that emphasized the importance of fostering an ecosystem supportive of EV development in Southeast Asia.

“Indonesia, in particular, possesses the necessary resources to sustain and advance the electric vehicle industry,” stated Moeldoko confidently.

Moeldoko further mentioned that five ASEAN countries—namely the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia—have committed to jointly develop electric batteries for future applications. This collaborative effort demonstrates Indonesia’s role as a pivotal player in driving the global expansion of electric vehicles. Moeldoko emphasized the massive strides made by Indonesia in EV development while concurrently holding the ASEAN chairmanship.

“I urge entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers not to underestimate the significance of electric vehicles as the future of clean transportation, contributing to a cleaner world and securing the well-being of future generations,” Moeldoko asserted.

In addition to the direct benefits in the transportation sector, the development of electric vehicles is poised to bring indirect advantages to various other industries. With a substantial portion of the state budget (APBN) currently allocated to fuel subsidies, the widespread adoption of electric vehicles holds the potential to redirect these funds toward vital sectors such as healthcare and education, facilitating overall societal progress.

Regarding the implementation of electric vehicle subsidies, Moeldoko confirmed that the government is actively evaluating and refining the policy’s effectiveness. This evaluation process will encompass various aspects, including addressing disparities in incentives and subsidies, streamlining subsidy and incentive mechanisms, and exploring additional potential improvements.

The PEVS 2023 exhibition, which brings together approximately 50 key stakeholders from the electric vehicle industry, will run until May 21st at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta. The event serves as a platform to showcase the latest advancements, promote industry collaboration, and further accelerate the growth of the electric vehicle sector in Indonesia.

Indonesia’s ambitious strides in the electric vehicle industry, combined with its commitment to fostering collaboration within the ASEAN region, position the country as a promising player in the global
