Lampung - A silver lining amid the unfolding tragedy of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the emergence of various innovations in society. Among them was the Uluan Nughik Thermal Chamber (UNTC), currently being developed by a team of doctors and health experts in Tulang Bawang Barat Regency, Lampung Province.
The innovation dragged a huge attention from the Executive Office of the President (KSP), who directly visited Lampung province to monitor and evaluate the COVID-19 responses.
The UNTC is a man-made chamber designed to create a situation that will relieve shortness of breath, headaches and coughs. The inventors reassured that there was no use of chemical substances, drugs, injections, or active radiation in the technology.
"The chamber works to manipulate temperature, air pressure, and humidity. There are no drugs used, only physiologically engineered machines that help to ease patients' symptoms," said Doctor Khairun Nisa Berawi, a member of the health expert team developing the technology, to the KSP team on Wednesday (25/8).
The chamber was first introduced in July and it has been tested on 100 COVID-19 patients. Khairun Nisa claimed that 98 patients said they felt better after they got medical treatment inside the chamber. However, the team admitted that UNTC was still in the initial research stage. It explained why the prototype chambers were only tested on COVID-19 patients with mild to moderate symptoms.
According to the Regent of Tulang Bawang Barat, Umar Ahmad, who is also the leading supporter of the newly-invented chamber, there were only two units of UNTC available. Further, patients entering the chamber are expected to receive not less than three hours’ medical treatment for effective results.
He hoped the UNTC could become an alternative form of COVID-19 scientifically-proven therapy. Thus, he expected the government would support the UNTC’s next stage of research, hoping the initiative would be soon replicated nationwide.
According to KSP Senior Advisor, Abraham Wirotomo, KSP would always support every domestic initiative or innovation aiming to tackle COVID-19. "We will build a communication with the Health Ministry to further discuss the UNTC matter and its development," said Abraham.
